Apple is reportedly working on a cheaper version of its anorexic MacBook Air and according to Digitimes, the new Air could end up with a $799 price tag.

This would make it more than competitive compared to current generation ultrabooks and put it roughly on part with next generation ultrabooks. The rumored launch date is Q3, so Intel still has ample time to come up with cheaper ultrabooks and meet its $699 goal.

However, there is also a chance that ultrabooks and the new Air will also have to compete with high-end Windows tablets, or hybrid tablets to be precise. Also, bear in mind that Digitimes has a mixed track record when it comes to Apple rumors, so take it with a pinch of salt.
