AMD switchable graphics support Intel CPUs

AMD was not only talking about its 28nm notebook graphics chip, it has also reminded us that it has its own switchable graphics.

AMD has been playing with switchable graphics for a long time and these days they do offer switchable graphics for both AMD and Intel CPUs.

They use two options and it’s up to OEMs to choose which one they prefer. The first one is automatic switching based on application. Once the OS detects e.g. a game, it starts up the discrete graphics.

The second method is based on application list where you can make a list of applications and tell your computer when do you want discrete graphics and when integrated can do the job. This is a user based method as users can decide which application they want to go either way.

Since AMD has quite a few design wins with Intel CPUs and ATI / AMD graphics having switchable graphics that work with Intel chips makes a lot of sense.

Of course the future 28nm mobile Southern Islands generation will continue the switchable graphics tradition.
