Job's mob very serious about gaming potential

Apple has been talking a lot about gaming on Apple products over the past two years, and apparently they really do see the potential of gaming on their platforms. This was further evidenced by the hiring of longtime IGN editor Matt Casamassina as the new head of editorial content for the gaming section of the App Store for both the iPad and iPhone.

Casamassina himself revealed the news to the world with a Weblog entry that announced the news. The decision isn’t really surprising, as Apple needs someone with a good feel for not only gaming but also the gaming industry in order to popularize the Gaming App Store Section.

A lot of what we suspect is that Casamassina will be evangelizing the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad as a gaming platform. His team will likely be responsible for the selecting of the “What’s Hot” and “What We’re Playing” sections of the store as well as recommendations made by his team.

The decision by Apple would appear on the surface to reinforce Apple’s decision to heavily promote gaming on mobile platforms as a revenue stream. While independent developers have made up a good number of the gaming apps submitted to the Gaming Apps Store, bigger companies and players are moving into the space and we suspect that you will see the number and quality of games continue to rise for these platforms.
