Apple said to have sold 600,000 to 700,000 already

While Apple has not announced any sort of numbers this year, analysts that we spoke with over the weekend believe based on their findings that Apple moved between 600,000 to 700,000 iPads over the weekend during the official launch of the WiFi version of the product. Sources tell us that the majority of consumers purchasing an iPad also purchased at least some accessories, which adds to the sales bonanza over the weekend for Apple.

One thing that can now be officially confirmed is exactly what is under the hood of the current generation of iPad and what the performance of the unit is like in comparison to the iPhone. While Apple has talked in generalities, they have not really been all that specific so far. Our moles have confirmed that the iPad is powered by the Cortex A8 ARM single core, as many has suspected. The unit shares the same PowerVR SGX 535 GPU and 256MB of RAM that is used in the iPhone 3GS. Initial claims of 512MB of RAM appear to be incorrect.

As for the performance of the iPad, in general according to tests by our moles it runs about twice the speed of the iPhone 3GS when running native applications. This is no surprise, since the A4 (Apple’s name for the processor) is clocked at 1GHz and has the advantage of both AC and battery power.

Many analysts that we have spoken with seem to be taking a “wait and see attitude” about the long-term potential of the Apple iPad. Several heavy hitters, including Dell, HP and Lenovo are watching the launch closely, as sources tell us that all three are believed to have advanced iPad-like designs either ready or close to ready, should the market explode. It does appear that the sales potential may be greater, but the real reality will be seen over the next couple of weeks as sales move from early adopters and fan boys to the more general buying public.
