Germans call for Internet Explorer boycott

Versions 6, 7 and 8

The German government has instructed users to find alternatives to Internet Explorer, due to the browser lacking in the security department. The move closely follows Microsoft’s admission on IE being the weak link in recent attacks on Google.

The warning applies to IE versions 6, 7 and 8 but the instructions on how to exploit the flaw have already found their way to the Internet. In fact, some experts claim that it’s an equivalent to leaving the window to your house open.

Microsoft argued against this and said how risk to users is low and that browser’s improved security settings would prevent risk. Germans however, won’t have any of this and claim that this wouldn’t help security.

Microsoft Germany’s Thomas Baumgaertner does not agree with such a move as he claims that the Google attacks were done by “highly motivated people with a very specific agenda". He goes on saying that the attacks were not aimed at users or consumers and how consumers don’t face any threats.

Microsoft’s advice is to put browser’s security zone to “high”, but as you know, such maneuver will block out more than just “bad guys”. The actual patch to fix this is nowhere to be seen and we’ll see how this develops but it’s certainly not looking good for Redmond.

More here.
