by on29 September 2023

Big win for Europe

A moment ago, Intel´s CEO Pat Gelsinger announced the start of high-volume manufacturing on the Intel 4 process technology at Fab 34 in Leixlip, Ireland.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, Dr. Ann Kelleher, general manager of Technology Development at Intel, and Keyvan Esfarjani, Chief Global Operations Officer, took the stage to explain how the delivery of this manufacturing step, made possible by extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology, will usher in a future of leading-edge Intel products.

The fab in Oregon did the risk production of the Intel 4-based Meteor Lake, a CPU known as Core Ultra, and will commercially launch on December 14. Irland Fab 34 is producing volume as Intel expects to ship millions of these products during its lifecycle.

At last week's Intel Innovation conference in San Jose, Intel pointed out that Meteor Lake is what they want to call AIPC, the new tile-based processor with a dedicated AI engine that will bring AI to millions.

European Union can also cash this opening as a big win. This is the most prestigious fab for Intel, and it takes a manufacturing crown for the moment. It is also an important step in the five nodes in the year's plan and the general IDM 2.0 plan for Intel to become a global manufacturing fab.
