Nokia owners to get RIM developed support

Nokia announced in July that the company would be pulling the plug on their BlackBerry Connect offering that allowed BES support on Nokia devices. It seems now that RIM will be producing a new connectivity option that will run on Symbian devices.

While the BlackBerry Connect solution offered very basic BES functionality, it still gave Nokia S60 users an option to use their devices in companies that had standardized on the BES technology.

The new BlackBerry connectivity option will likely not be called BlackBerry Connect, but it will open the door for additional options for phones such as the Nokia handsets that are powered by the Symbian OS. While we do know that RIM will be doing all of the development, we don’t know what, if any, other Symbian OS-powered devices this new option will support.

While we will have to wait and see what RIM announces, it is obvious that RIM is looking to expand their reach; and bringing at least some of their BlackBerry technology to other products might just be the right way to do that. Look for an additional announcement from RIM as to the future for this technology in the next couple of months. Don’t be surprised, however, if it does come at a cost.
