Toyota goes into top gear with Nvidia Drive PX

by on10 May 2017

For autonomous vehicles

Nvidia CEO has just announced that Toyota picked Drive PX.

This is a big design win for Nvidia as Toyota is currently the number two car company by volume in the world, breathing down Volkswagen's neck.

The cars based on this technology should ship in the next few years but there is no precise date on when we can expect such vehicles. The 350,000 employee company is definably going to drive some volume and should be good for Nvidia, especially since it has lost the Volkswagen deal to Qualcomm.

The self-driving cars on the streets are expected by 2020, which is just two and a half years from today, and things are happening in the self-driving game much faster than most people expected. Tesla and a few other big firms have assisted driving on the street and it will just become wider spread in the future.

Nvidia-  unrelatedly - talked about its Xavier supercomputer that was announced in September last year, but one can only speculate if this will find a place in new Toyota cars. The Xavier can produce 30 Teraflops within a very reasonably 30W and should be available later this year.
