And the winning team is...

Yesterday, MSI's Master Overclocking Arena 2008 took place in Taipei, Taiwan with competitors from Europe and APAC battling to become the best overclocking team and winning the grand prize of US$3,000.

We were there to cover the event and once again we were impressed by how friendly a competition it was, with many of the teams helping each other out when their competitors were having problems. Many of the favorites didn't fare too well, which gave some of the other teams a chance to show what they could do.

Before the competition kicked off, MSI and their partners for the event had some short speeches and the event hostess, Janet Hsieh, a popular TV show hostess in Taiwan, was shown the basics of overclocking by local overclocking legend Coolaler.

The event was open to the general public and held near the Taipei computer market, although the rain seemed to have kept most of the spectators away. The teams had plenty of time to set up their rigs, although some experienced fatal motherboard problems even before they've got the systems up and running properly.

The competition consisted of two benchmarks, SuperPi 1M and 3DMark01 SE, and the team that scored the highest overall performance growth for the two benchmarks would win the competition. The SuperPi 1M benchmark was creamed by the Indonesian team, beating the Greek team by a massive 4.5 percent.

The 3DMark01 session got extended and for a long time it seemed like team South Africa, who by the way had the youngest competitor at the event, 17-year-old Goody Roodt. However, the Coolaler Taiwan team managed to beat them near the end of the original time for the event and then beat their own score during the extension, but was beaten in the final minutes by the Greek team.

The overall winner ended up being the Indonesian team as they scored the fourth best 3DMark01 result and no other team could catch up with the huge gap they had in SuperPi 1M. Greece came in second and the third place went to the Coolaler Taiwan team.

Check out some pictures from the event below and you can find out more details about it here, as well as the exact benchmark figures all the teams scored.
