South Korea is undercutting its growth potential in the global mobile phone market by insisting on keeping its own standards.

Tero Ojanpera, chief technology officer for Nokia, said that if South Korea kept its own chip standards it will lose its dominance in computer chips to Taiwan and China.

Ojanpera said South Korea needed to adapt more of the global technologies. South Korea has been developing its own wireless Internet software platform for mobile phones.This makes it difficult for other companies to enter the South Korean market while at the same time increasing research and development costs for South Korean companies, he said.

Nokia stopped selling phones in South Korea in 2003 after failing to gain significant market share here.
