Opening day coverage

After having been located in temporary barracks for the last couple of years, the new Guanghua computer market in Taipei has finally opened its doors and the new building is nothing short of fantastic compared to the temporary buildings. The new building stands six floors tall and has several hundreds of little shops in it.

The outside was clad in Sony advertising at the grand opening day and even the Mayor of Taipei, Hau Lung-pin, was there to take a look. The picture below is of him at the Asus display booth on the ground floor having a look at one of Asus's gaming notebooks.

The ground floor is reserved for display booths rather than shops, and from what we understand, this is also the most expensive floor to rent space on. On the opening day, Asus, TomTom, Sony, Samsung, Microsoft, Acer, Intel and a few other companies had set up booths here, but we'd expect there to be a rotation of these over time.

Also on the ground floor is a small food court in case you get hungry wandering around the computer market. There's even a little corner shop where you can buy a snack or a drink.

Moving up in the building what was quickly clear was that even though the corridors are about twice as wide as in the temporary buildings, it'll still get quite crowded on a busy day. The design of the new building is slightly odd, as the floors are sort of in a figure of eight with an extended stretch in the middle. There's also a small bridewalk on each floor if you want to head outside for some fresh air.

Despite the fact that not all shops weren't ready for business on opening day, those that were was filled to the brim with components. There are shops selling just about anything you could want in the Guanghua computer market, but to simply call it a computer market doesn't quite cover it. There are shops selling Karaoke equipment, books, DVDs and VCDs, sports and hiking gear, electronic components and just about anything else. We even found a shop that specialized in selling various console spare parts, including laser pickups and replacement casings.

At the top floor were some branded shops and we found Kingston, OCZ and Razer having their own little retail outlets here.

Finally, no opening day is complete without some scantily clad girls and Microsoft had brought with them a team of Xbox 360 girls and Ninja Gaiden II girls.

All in all, it looks like the new Guanghua computer market will be a huge success and the new building is both much more convenient and nicer than the temporary buildings. The only concern has been the higher rents, but hopefully the businesses will make more money in this new building, as well.
