Four makers of flat panel displays have agreed to create cross-licensing patents, buying products from each other and cooperating in research and development. The four have been involved with a deal worked out by the South Korean Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy.

Samsung Electronicsm Samsung SDI, LG Electronics and LG.Philips have agreed to buy more panel components and equipment from South Korean manufacturers, while reducing purchases from abroad.

The move has been brokered by the ministry which is worried that South Korea's market leadership is being threatened by rival companies in Taiwan, Japan and China. It has ordered Korean companies to cooperate more.

The four have agreed to standardise flat panel sizes to enhance competitiveness in global markets.
