Redbox game rentals are go

by on17 June 2011

$2 per day starting today
Game rentals through Redbox are now on, starting today in about 21,000 Wal-Mart stores and gas station locations across the U.S. The cost will be $2 per day and the kiosks will feature Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 3 titles. Redbox is not commenting on how many game titles they are planning on loading into each kiosk.

Those that rent a game from Redbox and keep the title for 30 days will be charged $60, and they can keep the game. From our understanding, there is no plan to send the box to those that end up purchasing a title.

As far as value goes, the Redbox option actually isn’t a bad deal if you play through the game quickly; but we will have to see what the title availability looks like when compared to Gamefly or Plurent before we pass final judgment. We suspect that as with the Blu-ray offerings in Redbox kiosks, the company will ramp up the number of titles in the kiosk according to customer demand. So, at least to start with, don’t expect most kiosks to have that many games.
