IBM has turned 100 and even at this age it is still the daddy in many market segments.
In an effort to properly mark the anniversary, big blue has announced a year-long global initiative dubbed IBM100. The program will offer hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants for volunteer programs and 300,000 employees will offer hours of free service to help the scheme along.
The goal of the initiative is to share IBM’s extensive expertise with local communities and put the skills of its workforce to good use, by allowing them to pursue pet projects that could benefit the average Joe.
IBM has had a rather colourful history, from the days of ticker tape on Wall Street, through the turbulent depression, to its controversial business dealings with Germany prior to WWII. The outfit dominated the tech industry for decades to come and thirty years ago it launched the PC, transforming the computing market from the ground up.
