Privacy and scope

A U.S. House
panel cancelled a hearing into the proposed bid by Microsoft for Yahoo! just hours before it was set to take place.

Politicians were concerned about privacy and the scope of the deal, even though it has not gone ahead yet. Three committees announced hearings, the first of which had been scheduled for today before the House Judiciary Committee's Task Force on Antitrust and Competition Policy.

It seems that the cancellation is due to scheduling problems and not to avoid discussion of the case. No witness list has been issued, and no new date has been set. The House Committee on Energy and Commerce's Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection is adding the Microsoft bid for Yahoo! to previously scheduled hearings in the spring on privacy issues raised by mergers in online advertising.
