AMD beats expectations, posts strong results

Fusion in high demand
AMD has posted better than expected quarterly earnings and the company believes it can continue to beat expectations thanks to upcoming Fusion products.

Q1 revenue was $1.61 billion, slightly higher than analysts’ expectations. Net income in the same quarter was $510 million, compared with $257 million in Q1 last year. However the graphics business reported an operating income of $19 million, compared with $47 million in the same period last year. AMD blames the downturn on seasonal market trends and reduced average sales prices.

In a conference call with analysts, AMD interim CEO Thomas Seifert announced that board was actively reviewing candidates for the new CEO. Former AMD COE Dirk Meyer recently left the company following a series of disagreements with the board about AMD’s mobile strategy.

In addition, Seifert praised the success of AMD’s new Fusion APUs, which were in high demand in Q1.

“APU unit shipments greatly exceeded our expectations, and we are excited to build on that momentum now that we are shipping our ‘Llano’ APU,” said Seifert.

The upcoming introduction of Llano, as well as the all-new Bulldozer architecture, promises to make 2011 a memorable year for AMD, provided everything goes as planned.
