Chrome notebooks to show up at Computex

by on30 March 2011

Mass availability expected in second half of the year
Major notebook vendors are expected to introduce the first Chrome OS notebooks sometime in the second half of the year.

Digitimes claims that Acer, Asus, Sony and Samsung are developing 10- to 12-inch notebooks, or netbooks, based on Intel and Nvidia processors. Some vendors could showcase the new machines at Computex if all goes well.

While the smartbook concept has been around for a couple of years, it has failed to materialize for a number of reasons. However, with much more advanced ARM processors and a proper operating system, things could be different this time around.

It is believed that vendors will try to maintain Chrome notebook prices below $300, in order to differentiate them from somewhat pricier tablets and to make them a bit more appealing to users on a budget.
