New challenges

AMD and its spin-off that plans to manufacture chips for it, better known as Globalfoundies, should be ready to start manufacturing 22nm products in 2012.

Once again, the transition will come after Intel's, as Intel might be starting the transition to 22nm at least six to nine months ahead of Globalfoundies. Intel will also have 22nm chips before AMD, at least if all goes as planned.

Intel is about to start shipping its first 32nm products, while AMD won’t have 32nm parts before the second part of 2010, again at least six to nine month after Intel. It looks that this delay transition trend will continue in the future and there is not much AMD / Globalfoundries can do about it.

After this step AMD / Globalfoundies will go toward 15nm and smaller.
