Rare deems Kinect lag not a problem

We dealt with that
While Kinect and PlayStation Move seem to have brought an onslaught of title announcements from companies that are absolutely keen on being the first to develop titles, many still ask questions about an often overlooked piece of the chain – lag. Rare’s Nick Burton says how his company did a lot of work to make sure lag isn’t a problem, and how this is a thing of the past. He added how lag for Kinetic Sports is set at 150ms, but as we find out this figure does not include TV lag.

Comparably in the audio world, 7ms of delay is the threshold where playing an instrument turns into torture of your senses, as the lagging sound tends to seriously affect human responsiveness. When a person unconsciously tries to compensate by slowing down to match the sound from the speakers, the sound does the same and it pretty much makes any kind of serious performance impossible.

This, coupled with the 150ms lag times pretty much confirms initial fears that the upcoming motion sensing technology will probably stay within limits of casual gaming, for the current generation at least. On the other hand, while Burton admits that casual gaming has been their focus these past couple of years, he refuses to be labeled as such and says that the company is continually looking at the means to freshen up their image.

Meanwile, E3 reports confirm that “not all titles are created the same”, and how some titles have more lag than others, which means that it is up to developers to make it work.
