Will start flowing the classics next month

Sega will continue its current trend of bringing Genesis titles to any platform where they see a chance to cash in. In their latest move, the company will be bringing the Genesis library of retro classics to Steam, where it will be initially available for the PC with it expected to arrive for Mac, as well.

When the first batch of titles is released on Steam starting next month, they will carry a price tag of just $3, which is less than other platforms. The first arrivals will include Comix Zone, Ecco the Dolphin, Golden Axe and Vectorman. The second wave will likely include Altered Beast, Crack Down, Gain Ground, Shadow Dancer and Space Harrier.

Sega is claiming that if the Genesis titles on Steam prove to be as successful as expected, the company will continue releasing more titles every couple of months. With over 900 titles in the Genesis library, and Sega owning the rights to a good number of these, they could be releasing titles for a long time to come. Sources tell us that the first wave should be ready for download on June 1st if everything goes according to plan.

As for the rumors of possible Genesis and Dreamcast titles coming to Microsoft Game Room on the Xbox and PC, we are now hearing that apparently the Genesis releases will likely not be appearing in the Game Room due to the decision to do the Steam release. Some sources suggest that with the success of the first Xbox 360 Genesis Arcade release that the company has a second release in the works to be announced at E3.

As for the Dreamcast titles, apparently with the new size limits for Xbox Live Arcade titles, it is likely that we will see a number of these Dreamcast classics released on Xbox Live Arcade over the next several months. This confirms what sources have been telling us previously. Sega, in conjunction with Microsoft, is expected to provide more details in a few weeks at E3.
