Sony might not launch it at E3 after all

More rumors about the future of the PSP 2 continue to suggest that Sony is very serious about doing something to rekindle the interest in the PSP. Sources are now telling us that the PSP 2 might not be ready for its first outing at E3 after all; and instead, the company might wait till Gamescom or perhaps even the Tokyo Game Show to launch the new device.

As for the PSP2 itself, you would not believe some of the wild stuff that we are hearing as to what the PSP 2 might include as part of its feature set. It does seem likely that it will offer two cameras as part of the package, as well as a touchscreen.

As for the more way-out things that are less likely, built-in 3G cellular data modem support and the use of a four-core processor within the unit are rumored. We also are starting to think that like the PSP Go, it will not offer a UMD drive, but rather use memory cards of some type for storage.

The reason for the delay might have more to do with the Sony strategy going forward than anything else. Our sources now seem to think that Sony’s road map would be for a 2011 arrival of PSP 2, not a holiday release this year. If this is the case, then a launch at E3 is unlikely. Some whispers that we hear indicate that some select PSP developers do already have development kits in their hands, but that isn’t something that we have been able to independently confirm as yet.

As for the PSP platform itself, Sony clearly has to do something to infuse some excitement back into the platform and get sales moving again so that developers feel good about developing for the platform. It seems, however, that if Sony holds back on this infusion it could allow other challengers like the iPhone/iPod Touch (as well as the new iPad) to gain a foothold, which isn’t something Sony can really afford at this point if they want to get users to buy a PSP. Sony will need sales to gain more developer support; and they can’t do that if there is nothing new to show or if the wait is too long.
