Sony still has at least some rights to titles

From whispers that we have been hearing over the weekend, it would appear that if our sources are correct the PlayStation 3 could be losing Insomniac Games as an exclusive PlayStation 3 developer. From what we hear, the developer is said to be going multi-platform.

The move really comes as no surprise, as the majority of studios want to maximize profit, and that means getting their titles released multi-platform to lead to more sales. While the developer has worked with Sony in the past, there would be nothing stopping the developer from releasing games on the Xbox 360, Wii and PC if they choose to do so.

What Insomniac Games is best known for is Ratchet & Clank as well as Resistance, and these are Sony published titles that our sources tell us are Sony exclusives. This means that while the studio will likely continue to develop these titles, they will remain exclusive to PlayStation 3; we don’t expect to see them on any other platform, but it is impossible to say what the actual wording might be in the agreement that they have with Sony.

The decision by Insomniac to go multi-platform could be an indication that the studio already has some original IP either in the early pre-production stage or already in development. This new title the studio might feel is either so hot or going to cost so much to produce that they need the multi-platform sales to make sure that the title will be successful. Our sources tell us to stay tuned, as they expect to hear more actual specifics on what Insomniac is up to in the coming weeks.
