Netflix streaming suggests not all created equal

PS3 load times slower than the Wii

The excitement for those getting their Wii Netflix streaming discs has spilled over into comparisons, as it always seems to these days. This time around, the new Wii streaming disc performance is compared to the performance of the PlayStation 3 Netflix streaming disc which has been around for sometime.

The results are interesting, to say the least. Apparently, the Wii version of the disc takes less time to load, start and get a movie playing than does the PlayStation 3 version. The margin of the difference between the two is noticeable, according to what we hear.

What might be more interesting is the news that the actual video quality between the two platforms appears to have the edge going to the Wii. From what we hear, however, console beats the performance and video quality of the Xbox 360 Netflix streaming solution on that platform.

What is perhaps even more amazing is that the comparison between the Netflix streaming solutions on consoles has started to spark comparisons between other platforms which are now offering Netflix streaming, such as televisions and Blu-ray players, for example. It would appear in our own testing that not every platform for Netflix streaming is created equal and some do appear to look better than others.

The real question we have to ask is, “Does it really matter?” and the truth of the matter is that if you can watch your Netflix streaming titles at a good clip with no stuttering, and it looks half near decent, does it really matter? We think that for streaming, you get what you get and it has more to do with the encoding and the platform’s ability to decode as well as the video processing and resolution that are supported by the device. If you are concerned about quality, we think you will see someone invest the time in testing them all; but is there really a test for something like this that can be so subjective? We have to think not, but you never know what creative people can come up with.
