Microsoft to partner with SanDisk on flash drives

As we
reported previously, Microsoft is now officially confirming by way of Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb that they will be dropping a system update starting April 6th that will add USB Mass Storage support. The update will allow the use of USB flash drives to store data, profiles and games on flash drives up to 16GB. The update is being officially called the “USB Memory Support” update by Microsoft.

Seems that our moles got it right, as flash drives will only use 16GB even if the device is larger, but you can use two of them at a time for a total of 32GB. As for USB hard drive support, we can now confirm by way Hryb that some hard drives may work, but they will only use 16GB of the total size of the hard drive.

Microsoft will also be partnering with SanDisk on an Xbox 360 branded and approved USB flash drive that will also arrive in May. No word yet on what sizes it will be available in or at what price. Since the vast majority of USB Flash Drives are going to work just fine, we have to think that you would just want to purchase a 16GB flash drive from a vendor with a good track record and warranty.

For most of us, price and size will be the deciding factor on which USB flash drive we will purchase; but someone noted to us today that depending on the physical size of the drive, it might not be possible to have two of them installed side by side, depending on which ones you choose. You might want to consider this factor if you plan to use two of them.
