Eee PC SSD drives get tested

All SSDs aren't created equally

JKKMobile has put together a quick test of the SSD drives in the Eee PC 901 and 1000 to check out what the differences between them are. As many of you already know, the term SSD is used for a lot of things that are more or less just glorified flash memory these days.

It's interesting to see that the 4GB SSD in the Eee PC 901 outperforms the 8GB SSD in the Eee PC 1000 in the write tests, but the two are about as fast in the read tests, or should we say slow? Even the faster 4GB SSD doesn't manage much more than 30MB/s in the write test, and neither gets above 35MB/s in the read tests, which is barely much faster than some of the best SSD or CF cards on the market.

It gets even worse when you're looking at the secondary SSD, although the Eee PC 1000 fares better here with its 32GB drive managing read speeds of well over 35MB/s, but the write speeds are appallingly slow at about 12-13MB/s. The Eee PC 901's 8GB secondary SSD manages to produce just as poor write speeds and its read speeds just manages to hit 30MB/s.

We've seen SD cards and USB drives that can match the latter and it appears that Asus has used similar flash memory that can be found in these devices for the secondary drives. We can understand that this has been done to keep costs down to a reasonable level, but we can't help but feel that Asus is misleading a lot of customers by stating it ships the Eee PC 1000 with a 40GB SSD, when it clearly isn't the case, as the performance is nowhere near that of real SSD drives.
