Strong demand, but it shipped too late

Acer has
lowered its sales projections for the Aspire One, its first Atom-powered netbook.

The company claims demand is good, and that the netbooks are selling like hot cakes. However, in spite of that, the company was forced to cut its forecast due to launch delays caused by supply problems.

"Originally, the plan was to ship by the end of May," said Gianfranco Lanci, Acer CEO. "We lost about one month for different reasons."

Acer now expects to sell 5 to 6 million Aspire One netbooks this year. Originally, it expected sales of 5 to 7 million, so it's not a drastic cut, "just" a million units.

Anyway, Acer's Aspire One is currently the only Atom-based netbook readily available in Europe, and at €299 for the 8GB SSD version it's modestly priced, too. MSI's Wind is also available as of yesterday, if you want a pink one, that is, but we're not sure if many are in stock, anyway.
