Hardware maker Cisco is to move cyber space to outer space and install an Internet router in orbit. The move is to help the US Military improve its satellite communications, but Cisco is quick to point out that it could be turned to civilian use.

It could be used to route IP traffic between satellites in space in much the same way packets are moved on the ground, reducing delays, saving on capacity and offering greater networking flexibility.

According to a Cisco statement, currently remote terminals require data to be sent to the satellite, from where it is bounced back to an earth station for routing. This is then retransmitted to the satellite on a different frequency, selected depending on its destination.

If a router is put in space the satellite can pick the channel used to send the message to its destination by itself.
