It is not bonkers

Meta Platforms boss Mark Zuckerberg gave his views on the £5.5 trillion AI chipmaking plan by OpenAI chief Sam Altman last week, saying that they are not as bonkers as they sound.

.While he called the number "sky-high", Zuckerberg also said he believed in the need for such a plan for the future of artificial intelligence.

In a Morning Brew Daily podcast chat, Zuckerberg was asked about Altman’s plan to raise £5.5 trillion for the chip stuff needed to power AI machines.

The podcasters said that Altman’s plan had been called "over the top" by some people from the tech world. The Meta boss replied that the number was "sky-high" and hard to "get my head around".

But he said, "I think he’s right about one thing, that, if you look over the years, these companies keep making these bigger and bigger groups of computers to train the best models.”

He said that the growing size of AI model training groups would soon need a massive rise in chip making.

"So it’s like a couple of years ago, maybe it was like a thousand chips that you linked together. Then it’s 10,000, then it’s 100,000. At some point, it’s going to be a million. And then it’s like at some point, okay, yeah, you need to make a load of chips," he said.

"So, at that point, I don’t think he is nuts. I don’t know what it will take to speed up all of this to the point where the tech curve can keep up," the boss added.

Zuckerberg said that “at some point, Sam is right.” Ultimately, the industry will face “physical limits in terms of making chips and the power needed to train bigger models.”

"I think it is worth thinking about how to ease some of those limits because I think this tech’s going to make possible all these amazing things that I think are going to make our lives better in so many ways."
