Announcement on February 26th at MWC

Over the past few weeks, information and a few images have surfaced of LG’s first flagship smartphone release for 2017, the LG G6. The device has made its way into the hands of the folks at BusinessInsider, who were courteous enough to snap a picture revealing the rear of the unit in its full glossy black finish.

Although the context of the phone being used in a vehicle isn’t the best example of a PR boost prior to a new smartphone launch, it reveals that LG is serious about confronting the popularity of Apple's polished "Jet Black" color finishes for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus that debuted in September.

The LG G6 is expected to feature a large 5.7-inch, 2880x1440p resolution display with an unusual 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio. The LG G5, by contrast, uses a 5.3-inch 2560x1440p display. The new device is also expected to place an emphasis on minimal bezels, as this is a major theme across several top-tier mobile vendors this year including Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi to name a few. Just like the revolutionary Mi Mix concept phone and the upcoming Galaxy S8, the G6 will also sport curved display corners but will not be entirely borderless, leaving room for the camera lens, sensor and front speakers at the top of the device. The bezels are reported to be 4mm of space in total, as some recent sketches have illustrated.

In addition to the concept art, CNET Korea has mentioned that the device will feature a "glass sandwich" sealed unibody design with a non-removable battery. This will be implemented to accommodate an IP-68 water resistance certification.

Incoming features: Wireless charging, 32-bit audio, unibody design

Other notable features will include dual rear camera system and center-mounted rear fingerprint scanner like its predecessor, a Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) chip for the South Korean market, and a wireless charging coil for all other markets. The device will also include the 32-bit HiFi DAC featured in the LG V20 flagship, though will reportedly lose the modularity of its G5 predecessor after struggling to attract enough consumer interest in its previous device.

Launch price expected $50 higher than G5

As for pricing, Korea-based ETNews is now reporting that the LG G6 will launch at a $50 higher price point than its G5 predecessor due to its premium features, which should be convincing enough to justify the increase. The company has said it is trying to keep costs down as the G5 originally launched in Korea for around $720 USD. While not all features will be included in every market, the G6 launch price in Korea is expected to be around $770, and some representatives have added that Samsung and Apple are expected to follow up with Galaxy and iPhone price hikes during their own launches.

We expect to have all the details surrounding the LG G6 when our team travels to Barcelona for the announcement at Mobile World Congress on February 26th.
