A 6.4-inch high-end surprise

After officially launching the Mi Note 2 smartphone, Xiaomi has made a big surprise by announcing a new 6.4-inch ceramic-based Mi MIX smartphone designed in cooperation with French designer.

Probably tired of being considered a mainstream option, Xiaomi has decided to pull out the big guns to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung with the new 6.4-inch Xiaomi Mi MIX. While the announced Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is a decent smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi MIX is a completely different beast, designed in cooperation with French designer Philippe Starck and coming with an impressive design with a custom edge-to-edge screen, ceramic casing and plenty of power with Snapdragon 821 SoC.

The Mi MIX bring plenty of novelties, including a rounded custom-made 6.4-inch 2040x1080 resolution, 17:9 aspect ratio display with really thin bezels making it cover 91.3 percent of the front of the device.

In order to keep the design, Xiaomi had to put the front speaker and the front camera at the bottom and this is actually the first Xiaomi smartphone that lacks physical buttons and uses on-screen buttons. Thanks to the weird aspect ratio, you will actually get 16:9 area when on-screen buttons are enabled.

Xiaomi also had to redesign the actual earpiece and proximity sensors and since it is made completely out of ceramic (back, frame and buttons), it uses a piezoelectric ceramic driver for the earpiece and an ultrasonic proximity sensor. Xiaomi also used special tenon joints to put the display together with the unibody case so no glue, plastic or other adhesives were used.

When it comes to specifications, Xiaomi equipped the Mi MIX with some high-end hardware including Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 2.35GHz SoC, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 128GB of UFS 2.0 storage, support for 192 kHz / 24-bit audio, 4400mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0, all the usual connectivity options, including full NFC functionality, GPS and dual SIM.

It also comes with a 16-megapixel rear camera with PDAF and 4K video, 5-megapixel front camera and runs on Xiaomi's own MIUI 8 OS.

While the Mi MIX was announced as a concept smartphone, it appears that it will actually be available as of November 4th, at least in China, with a price set at RMB 3,499/ US $515. There will also be a special MI MIX 18K version with 18K gold rims, 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage space, priced at RMB 3999/ US $590. Both will ship with a leather case.
