Quanta reportedly struggling with Apple Watch

by on13 March 2015

70% defect rate?

Quanta is reportedly struggling to get to grips with Apple’s latest toys, and experiencing a staggering failure rate.

According to CTimes, as many as 70% of Apple Watches put together on Quanta’s assembly lines experience some sort of defect. However, it’s unclear what sort of defects Quanta is experiencing. These could range from purely aesthetic defects to more serious hardware failures. Quanta reportedly teamed up with Foxconn to borrow 3,000 workers needed to speed up production.

Quanta is one of the world’s leading ODMs, so if it can’t pull it off – who can? One possibility is that Apple will have to turn to other ODMs for help, but that still does not explain the very low defect-free rate.

Mind you, we are not dealing with some two-bit outfit, Quanta is huge, and in this case it’s backed by Apple, a tech heavyweight if there ever was one. It’s hard to explain a 70% failure rate, even when dealing with an entirely new product category, plagued by teething problems.
