Qualcomm and Google have announced the development of a Daydream standalone VR headset reference design powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 VR platform.

This time last year, Google introduced Daydream, a VR platform for Android devices that was built right into Android Nougat and supported by Google's own viewer hardware, the Daydream View. Today’s announcement advances the work that Qualcomm and Google had previously collaborated on to enable Daydream on smartphone devices. This is in addition to the Fall 2016 announcement of the Snapdragon 821 and 820 processors supporting Daydream ready devices.

One big major win is that the reference design features WorldSense for positional tracking right out of the box without any external equipment unlike most other desktop based VR systems. This will allow users to make the most of the VR experience in places that were previously off limits due to space limitations.

The new Daydream standalone headset reference design also includes custom specifications for tracking cameras and other sensors that make the best use of the Tango-based tracking technology Google has placed in the headset. This should allow developers to create enhanced user experiences that could include indoor navigation, physical space measurement, as well as other features of Project Tango.

The fruits of this multi-year effort with Google now offers users a growing ecosystem of Daydream headsets - from smartphone VR to standalone VR.  The first of these headsets are expected to hit shelves later this year.
