We reviewed the 40nm HD 4770 some time ago, and we were impressed by ATI's and TSMC's latest lovechild.

However, things aren't all that good if you're thinking about getting one. Thanks to high demand and poor yields, it seems to be suffering from some supply issues, and only a handful of cards are currently readily available.

To make matters worse, in Europe they retail for €83+, while the HD 4850 sells for as low as €85. Truth be told, most HD 4850's sell for about €89, while most HD 4770 sell for around €85.

However, some of the HD 4850's in question are non-reference designs, with good coolers, and some are even overclocked. Even at stock clocks, the HD 4850 is faster than the HD 4770, although it's quite a bit more power hungry as well, and not as overclockable as the 40nm part.

Hopefully TSMC will ramp up production soon, and ATI will allow partners to launch non-reference HD 4770 cards and drop prices.
