Video editing booster?

It's been fairly quiet about the so-called SpursEngine from Toshiba so far, and this Cell Broadband Engine derived processor has only made its way in to a few selected Toshiba noteboks, but it looks like this is set to change with Leadtek Japan showing off its PxVC1100 PCIe x1 card at CEATEC Japan 2008 next month.

The card itself looks rather unremarkable, and apart from the PCI Express x1 interface, it has a four-pin floppy style power connector, 128MB of XDR Rambus memory made up of what appears to be two 64MB chips made by Elpida and a rather large heatsink and fan considering the size of the card itself.

The idea is that the SpursEngine is meant to boost performance of video processing, no matter the type of video, be it SD or HD. There are still a lot of details missing about thie 1.5GHz multi core SpursEngine and we have yet to see any applications take advantage of it, but it appears that the first two will be Corel's DVD MovieFactory and WinDVD.

Without some better software backing it's hard to see the SpursEngine taking off at any larger scale, although we know that CyberLink has been in talks with Toshiba and has at least been developing support, but we're not sure at what stage this support is at the moment.
