Last week we showed you the first glimpse of 3D glasses that
Nvidia brands as 3D vision, here. This is an emerging technology that comes in Q4
2008 and we played with it last week. Like we said before, this is an old
concept and Nvidia tried to push this through with TNT and TNT 2 series but the
graphics card or the shutter glasses where not good enough for the concept to take off.
Now, some seven years later, here we go again and this time
the glasses are wireless and they have a battery inside. The battery is rechargeable
and you will recharge your glasses via a mini USB cable when you are not playing.
The shutter glasses do need synchronisation and this
little red transmitter is taking care that the glasses are turning on and off, so
you can have a 3D feeling. Of course, the red transmitter is connected to your PC.
You do need a special 120Hz monitor but we were told that
they will be available fairly soon and that they won’t cost that much more than
the standard one.
The cool thing is that the transmitter has a scrolling button
where you can change the 3D depth during the game. You can also do this in the driver. That is good but you might
need a few moments to adjust your eyes on the new 3D settings. The 3D looks
great in demos and in some of the games we’ve seen. We tried Unreal tournament
3 and it looks great.
The biggest issue is that the faster you go, you see less 3D as your
brain cannot process so many information, but once the gameplay slows down, the
3D look and feel comes back. Here are some pictures.
The great thing for Nvidia is that you need a lot of 3D power to run these glasses and games at two times 60Hz.
