Official site launches with countdown clock
As we told you about last week, a new NASCAR title is now confirmed to be in development for multiple platforms with studio Eutechnyx at the helm. Activision will be the publisher. This has been confirmed by a new official Website that launched today at: www.nascarthegame.com with a countdown clock that confirms we will get the specific details in five days. It is now confirmed that the title will be called “NASCAR The Game 2011.” It is also now confirmed that the title is slated for a February 2011 release and has been in development for some time.

It is now also confirmed that Eutechnyx is the NASCAR license holder and Activision will be in just the publishing role. While it has not been officially confirmed, it is believed that the Eutechnyx deal with Activision is through the company’s third-party partner publishing program; this is similar in scope to what we have seen other developers doing with Electronic Art’s partners program in the past.

According to sources, the deal between NASCAR and Eutechnyx is an exclusive multi-year deal. From the talk we have heard, NASCAR chose to do a deal with a developer rather than a publisher because they wanted to have more direct involvement with the finished product. Still, it was necessary for the developer to have a publishing deal with a first-tier publisher to make sure that the title received the necessary distribution and promotion. NASCAR believes that the hands-on approach with Eutechnyx will be a return to the days when Papyrus developed the NASCAR video gaming franchise.

The deal with Eutechnyx gives Activision a foot up in the world of big-time video game sports publishing. The company has not been very active in sports video game publishing beyond the Tony Hawk, Cabela, and Rapala offerings. Whispers we hear tell us that we should not take this deal as a sign that Activision is seeking to return to fully competing for big-time video game sports licenses. This does seem to fit in with the fact that Activision is in a publishing partner role.

The game is in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii. While reports of a PC version are rumored, apparently right now that does remain unconfirmed. Eutechnyx is looking to breathe new life into NASCAR video games and get back to what made the titles great, and giving the fans what they want. We will learn more about the specifics in five days when they will release more details on what we can expect from the new title.
