Name of the new FPS title in development

A while back we told you about a new first-person-shooter (FPS) title that Codemasters had in development that was being quarterbacked by Steward Black, best known for 2006 FPS title simply known as Black. While details have been sketchy, we now know that the name of the FPS title in development at Codemasters is called Bodycount.

The game has already been in development for about nine months and that does not count all of the months that various concepts were discussed prior to heading into production. The game features an impressive list of talent from a variety of studios in the area. The title is being developed using the Codemasters EGO Game Technology Platform and is being developed for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms.

The game itself has some lofty goals for a publisher who has not had much success developing or selling games out of the racing genre. The company has previously had the most success with the Grid, Dirt and Cricket franchises, with Gird and Dirt being the most recognizable to fans in North America. Codemasters has previously worked with outside studios such as Spark on the development of titles such as Turning Point Fall of Liberty without much success. Codemasters need to establish a new franchise in an area other than racing games, and assembling this cast of people to create this FPS title might just be the key to do so.

While the production of Bodycount will be taking place in the Guildford Codemasters Studio, beyond hyping the fact that the title will deliver best in class gun play and jaw dropping devastation, we don’t know much; other than Black claims that he is out to break the FPS mold and do something unique and different. The title itself is slated for release in the first quarter of 2011, but we suspect that we will be able to at least get a first look at it in June at E3. Many people still recall Black when it was released back in 2006 as one of their favorite titles. Let’s hope that Codemasters can tap into that magic.
