More Electronic Arts games will see their online game play go dark as servers are shut down in March. The decision to pull the plug on the online play for many titles is being viewed as a cost cutting move for the publisher that is looking for ways to save money anyway that it can. While the titles selected span a variety of platforms, a good number of the titles are original Xbox titles that Microsoft itself will be pulling the plug on for online game play for the older system in April.

What might be more surprising is that a number of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 titles will lose their online game play, as well. When looking at the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 titles selected, several of them have not actually been out that long. The more puzzling move, however, is the selection of some titles that are only being shut down for a particular platform, while it will continue on other platforms.

While EA does not explain how the decision was reached and why some platforms were selected while others were not, we have to think that continued popularity has a lot to do with it. We have to wonder if this will be a trend that we will start to see with other publishers as well. The cost of bandwidth, servers and power being what it is today, it is an understandable decision when a game isn’t popular. It will leave many asking the question of how long one can expect the publisher to provide online gaming support; even further, what is an acceptable length of time for such access?
