Bono calls for tighter Internet control

Big Brother calling

In his column for the New York Times, Bono Vox, the frontman of popular Irish rock band U2, commented how the Internet should be held under tighter control, as the current trends allow for many wrongdoings.

Mr. Vox writes:"The only thing protecting the movie and TV industries from the fate that has befallen music and indeed the newspaper business is the size of the files". Indeed, downloading a band's entire career is only a few clicks/hours away, and the way the broadband highways are expanding, it will soon be only a matter of clicks.

Bono goes on saying that the file-sharing so far makes it evident that "the people it hurts are the creators — in this case, the young, fledgling songwriters who can't live off ticket and T-shirt sales like the least sympathetic among us." Furthermore, Mr. Vox firmly believes that the technology which would put a stop on this is available.

In his concluding statement, Bono said: "Perhaps movie moguls will succeed where musicians and their moguls have failed so far, and rally America to defend the most creative economy in the world, where music, film, TV and video games help to account for nearly four per cent of gross domestic product".

On another note, Benjamin Franklin also said how a man who trades freedom for security does not deserve nor will he ever receive either. (I doubt W. Bush read that quote. sub.ed.)
