Some first looks and surprises, as well

While the debate rages on about how deserving Uncharted 2 was to win Game of the Year, there were some interesting new title announcements as well as some first game play looks at some upcoming titles, as well.

In the news that we have to believe a lot of people were worried would never arrive, the first teaser trailer was shown for the sequel to the hugely popular Batman: Arkham Asylum. Currently, Rocksteady sequel will be known as Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 for the time being, with the Warner Bros now actually fully in and committed to the video game production business on a significant level (and the fact that the first game came through Edios, which is now owned by Square Enix), the sheer legal wrangling alone to get the sequel done was put in doubt by many. It seems, however, that the new title will be a Rocksteady-developed sequel for Warner Bros Interactive. While we are not sure if Square Enix or Edios have a role in it, the fact of the matter is that it will be getting made. There is no word on a possible release date, but our sources say you will hear more about when to expect it at E3 next year.

Activision will be bringing the True Crime franchise back with a new installment of the game. United Front will be the studio doing the development on this title. The trailer that was shown was compelling and engaging from the story perspective. We will have to see if this move by Activision to bring this franchise back turns out to be a good decision.

The news that Lucas Arts would be announcing the next chapter in the Star Wars video game universe had everyone buzzing, especially when it was learned that it was something other than the next Battlefront title that everyone assumed that it was. Instead, Lucas Arts treated those in attendance with the news that a new Force Unleashed title was in development. Right now, it is just being called The Force Unleashed 2, but the big news is that the title has been in development for some time and it will ship in the fall of 2010.

While pretty much everyone thought that Harmonix/MTV would be doing another single band oriented Rock Band title were not disappointed, you might change your tune, so to speak, when you find out that the next Rock Band title will feature none other than Green Day. This decision left a lot of us scratching our heads, but maybe Harmonix/MTV knows something that we don’t. Expect it in the early fall of 2010.

Trailers were also shown for Medal of Honor, Crackdown 2, and Halo Reach. The Medal of Honor trailer was perhaps the most compelling of the three, with some very intense game play that looked to be in many ways a page right out of the Call of Duty playbook; but it looked different due to the presentation of the graphics powered by what appeared to be the DICE Frostbite engine. The Halo Reach trailer the other had was a sharp contrast to what we might have expected. It was deep in storyline, as Halo pretty much always is, and it did seem to draw you in a way that was sure to please fans of the franchise. Both Medal of Honor and Halo Reach will arrive before the holidays of 2010. We have a reason to believe that the Halo Reach beta will start on or about April 29th, 2010, according to our sources.
