Square Enix pulled the title over quality issues

Our sources indicate that despite six months of development, Fortress was pulled before the Swedish developer GRIN went under.

From what we are hearing, since Square Enix pulled this Final Fantasy spin-off back after issues with the quality and direction that the title was heading, they are continuing development of codename Fortress, but in a different direction than GRIN intended.

According to our sources and the grumbling of former employees, the Fortress project is what killed GRIN in the end. Still, the string of bad titles had a lot to do with it, if you ask us. The sales of the new Bionic Commando title that GRIN did for Capcom never sold as well as expected, but did perform better than Wanted: Weapons of Fate and Terminator: Salvation; both of these received bad reviews and had very little sales.

While Square Enix has not said anything publicly about the Fortress project, it is possible that some of GRIN’s work on this title might live on if it ever finds its way to release.
