Sheds 380+ units during restructuring

Restructuring is not always a positive thing, and more often than not, in the end the company is left with less than they had to start out with. This is in line with what happened to Game Crazy after its restructuring was completed. The video game retailer had over 630+ units open at one point, but now only about 250 remain.

The company worked with video store rental retailer Hollywood video, and Game Crazy stores many times were either inside or next to Hollywood Video locations.  Movie Gallery, who owns Hollywood Video, has been going through its own series of problems and while Game Crazy did thrive in some locations, others just were not cutting it. Movie Gallery did what it could to try to solve its problems, but they filed for Chapter 11 protection to reorganize. In October, Game Crazy undertook an effort to weed out poorly performing stores and closed about 200 locations as part of this effort.

With the latest restructuring effort the company will close 760 stores from all of the company’s retail locations, including Game Crazy stores. Only 250 Game Crazy locations will survive this round and this will leave a serious gap for any possible competition to GameStop. It will be difficult for the remaining stores to have enough clout to be able to generate enough sales for publishers to really want to work with the chain. Some analysts suggest that the chain is likely to continue to struggle moving forward.
