Qualcomm shows off new Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip

by on05 January 2024

Apple rival

Qualcomm showed off a new Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, a single-chip design that will probably power Apple Vision Pro rivals from Meta, Samsung, Google and HTC.

The plus version beats last year's XR2 Gen 2, with better GPU and CPU speed -- up 15% and 20% each, support for 4.3K per eye picture at 90fps, and the chance for headsets to have 12 or more cameras with on-device AI skills. The latter lets fitted models track user moves and nearby things better for more realistic VR and MR fun. For efficiency gains.

There is a 50 per cent boost as the previous XR2 Gen 2 when compared with the XR2 Gen 1 design. Basically, there's no change there.

Qualcomm Technologies XR boss Hugo Swart said that the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 will bring XR work and play to the next level by bringing amazingly clear pictures to things like room-size screens, life-size covers and virtual desks.

The new chip is likely to clean Apple's clock when it releases its £2,500 overpriced Vision Pro headset. Qualcomm says its chip will be cheap enough for makers to build kit around.

Given that we have already seen a £360 Meta Quest 3 with the slightly worse XR2 Gen 2 chip, the future of XR may not be that pricey.

The new Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip is made with Google and Samsung, both of which have skills in the Android world and making mobile VR devices. The three had said they had plans to make an XR platform in February of 2023.
