NYSE Data Network moves up to 100 Gbps

More bandwidth needed

As computers continue to be able to process data faster and faster the New York Stock Exchange will getting a network upgrade to 100 Gbps over Ethernet with some help from Euronext, the company that operates the NYSE, and from network equipment vendor Ciena Corporation.

According to Ciena the 100G network will be the keystone of the new data centers of the NYSE Euronext locations in the London and New York City metro locations. The new data centers are scheduled to go live in 2010 and according to Ciena will need bandwidth capacity to support “more than one billion daily transactions comprising petabytes of data.”

Ciena first unveiled its 100G network capabilities in a live demo at the December 2008 Supercomputing Conference. Ciena claims that it has been able to generate 100Gbps over a single wavelength using its own technology, compared to other 100G tests that relied on inversely multiplexed ten 10Gbps wavelengths or two combined 40 Gbps wavelengths. 

The Euronext network will utilize Ciena’s CN 4200 RS FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform, a wavelength-division multiplexing transport platform that Ciena claims is “designed for Telco and cable service providers, large enterprises, research and education institutions, and government organizations to deploy in locations that require massive service aggregation and wavelength routing.”
