AMD green turns to ripe Globalfoundires orange

AMD spin-off Globalfoundries has submitted a revised design of its Malta fab to town planning officials, and the shocking change is that it will now coat the 1.3 million square feet facility in orange paint. This could make AMD products a bit more popular in Holland.

Seriously, Globalfoundries is trying to make a name for itself, and create its own corporate identity, putting AMD's green behind it, and choosing a ripe, dark shade of orange. Although the new company will heavily rely on AMD, it also plans to cater to other semi companies, hence the makeover.

As we reported, construction is slated to start in summer 2009, but Globalfoundries still needs to buy some of the land for its planned plant, 225 acres to be exact.

“We are negotiating the final contract on the land purchase now,” says company spokesman Travis Bullard. “It should close in the next couple of weeks.”

Globalfoundries is working closely with Gov. David Paterson’s office, but it's also facing some flack from New York lawmakers. Members of the state Senate Labor Committee are asking the governor to urge Globalfoundries to use local construction crews in the construction of its $4.2 billion plant. Globalfoundries is confident a satisfactory labor agreement will be reached, but claims the issue will not affect its timetable.

“We have a narrow window of time in which to complete this complex project in order to successfully bring products to market,” Bullard said. “It is critical that we complete this project on schedule and within budget, any start-up delays could put this project at risk.”
