Not just for Windows

eRacks
Open Source Systems has released a new desktop model that uses Intel's Core i7 processor which is based around the Linux operating system.

It is one of the first Linux packages to ship with the i7 processor on board and the OS required some tweaking to take advantage of the i7's integrated memory controller that doubles or even triples the peak memory bandwidth. eRacks said that to a user, this means increased multithreading performance, which is ideal for computationally-intensive applications including serious digital media creation, multi-application workloads, and heavy-duty gaming.

It also means that eRacks could increase the amount of memory onboard to 24 GB. The eRacks/i7DESK default configuration includes software such as Open Office. In a press release the company said that Linux has long dominated the server market, and is now among the fastest growing operating systems in the desktop world.

eRacks tends to customize its computers and the company has provided a choice of Linux flavors, including Ubuntu Linux, and two i7-compatible motherboards.  There is a 'quieter' option, and systems that offer multiple graphics cards, and SSD drives.

Prices start at $2,095 and include configuration.
