Windows 10 Preview Build 10158 is out

Many updates, Edge browser, Cortana and improved design

We are now less than a month away from the Windows 10 launch. The latest update is available for beta testers who chose the fast update option.

The last preview release is getting your OS updated from Preview Build 10130 to Preview Build 10158.  The company has updated Microsoft Edge, its highly acclaimed browser, which is now using official Microsoft Edge branding. Before this release the browser was known as Project Spartan. The browser is getting some new features, including a home button. You can import favourites and bookmarks from other browsers.

Microsoft promises general UX improvements and refinement. A new feature that we like is the ability to swipe up on the left side to open all apps. This sounds a bit like Mac OS X, but we like it. Tablet mode got some important design updates too.

There are some updates to Cortana. You can tell it to "Email Sam Smith about a phone update" and start talking. In an ideal world, the email client will find the right person from your address book and add phone update as a subject and it will start typing. We will get back to you on whether this really works as advertised.

Cortana will get better Office 365 integration. The photos app in Windows 10 scored a better performance and reliability as well as some new capabilities. The app now supports animated GIFs, as this was the top request from my fellow Windows insider testers.

The Snipping tool has a delay option as a part of a new OS, and there is a preview release of Windows 10 SDK available. This is something that app developers will want and need. Chaps with Microsoft's Surface 3 tablet will be able to upgrade to this one, too, and enjoy all the improvements. Users of Surface Pro 3 devices should notice an improvement in battery life.

Microsoft has shared a compatiblity list on the company's official blog. We are not sure if this is the last preview release or if we can expect one more before the operating system gets to release to manufacturer (RTM) status.
