PlexTurbo provides support for SSDs

Plextor has released its smart caching software, PlexTurbo, which adds support for additional solid-state drives.

We saw the new revision of PlexTurbo alongside its M6e Black Edition PCIe SSD at the Consumer Electronics Show early last month.

Like previous versions, PlexTurbo 2.0 reserves a chunk of system memory - between 256MB and 1GB depending on SSD capacity - to speed up access of frequently requested files.

One of the things which is good about the system is that it can handle a sudden loss of power, which is something other DRAM-based caching solutions needs an active battery backup to resolve.

Plextor claims to improve performance over relying on caching technologies built into the operating system itself.

The original PlexTurbo 1.0 release arrived with the company's M6 Pro SSD, but 2.0 brings with it considerably wider support. As well as offering improved performance to M6 Pro owners, the new version will work with any capacity of M6e 2.5" SSD, M6e M.2 SSD, or the M6e Black Edition PCIe SSD to improve performance.

The new PlexTurbo software can be activated by installing the company's Plextool software toolkit - a Windows exclusive, at present.

M6 owners who have already installed Plextool 1.1.5, which includes PlexTurbo 1.0, are advised to uninstall the old version before installing the new release.

Installation does not require a firmware update on the drive. Plextool can be used to install one if it is available - and should not affect any data currently stored on the drive.
