Wants to save power

According to a press release on Transmeta's Website (does anyone still remember them?), Nvidia has signed a licensing deal with the company worth US$25 million for access to power saving patents. This is a one-off payment and it covers all of Transmeta's patents and patent applications.

Its deal covers Transmeta's LongRun, LongRun2 and other low-power technologies. So far, it's not known what Nvidia intends to be using this technology for, but considering Nvidia's entry into the ARM CPU market earlier this year, it's possible that Nvidia is looking at making an even more power efficient CPU for handheld devices.

Other possibilities would be for new mobile chipsets, such as the rumored deal with Apple, but all this is pure speculation. Nothing in the press release gives away what Nvidia might possibly be using this technology for.

You can find the press release here.
