Midnight June 18th

Yes, it really does look like XP being an option on PCs is going to be coming to an end. Dell has announced its last call for orders for XP systems. Dell will be accepting orders for systems until midnight on June 18th. The company claims that it will need time to transition all the way over to being Vista exclusive to meet Microsoft’s deadline coming at the end of the month.

Dell will continue to offer an XP downgrade service to business customers purchasing Latitude, Optiplex, and Precision business products. However, corporate customers will have to purchase a Vista Business or Vista Ultimate license, but it is not yet known if they will be charging a fee to downgrade the systems that are purchased to XP.

While Dell will stop offering XP licenses at the end of the month, many other smaller dealers have already been stocking up to be prepared to deliver XP OEM licenses to customers that need them. Still, these small system builders have told us that the price of Windows XP Professional 32-bit has started to rise between $10 and $25 per week.

It is expected that some smaller dealers will be charging north of $200 for a copy of Windows XP Professional after the June 30th deadline. Still, copies will be available; it is more of a question of whether you are going to be willing to pay the asking price for them. As things stand, Vista to XP downgrades at the factory might be the best bet for many who still require Windows XP for the immediate future.
